Now that tax season is officially here, it’s time to gather your supplies and file your papers. But if you’re not sure where to start, then the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) offers a simple and free solution for those that are eligible.

There’s no invitation needed, and as long as you meet the criteria, this service will be here to help you keep even more money in your pockets.

Free Tax Filing From The CRA

SimpleFile is the CRA’s free tax filing service that is available to those with a lower income and a simple tax situation. It provides assistance in filing personal tax and benefit returns.

All that’s required of you is answering a few questions, and then the CRA uses that information (as well as your information on file) to fill out your tax return.

“Many vulnerable individuals with lower income are missing out on valuable benefit and credit payments because they are not filing their annual income tax and benefit return,” says the CRA.

SimpleFile invitations are sent out around early March, both digitally and physically. For those with an online CRA account, you can find your invitation package on your account. You may also receive a paper package by mail if you do not have an online account.

You can use SimpleFile digitally, by phone, or by paper. For phone and paper methods, you require a CRA invitation; digitally, SimpleFile is available with or without an invitation.

SimpleFile services will open on March 9, 2026.
