“The storm is likely to bring excessive rainfall and violent winds. It may cause flash flooding and landslides,” says the Government of Canada. Essential services may also be severely disrupted, including:

  • transportation
  • power distribution
  • water and food supply
  • telecommunications networks
  • emergency services
  • medical care

Travellers are advised to avoid non-essential travel to the affected areas. As defined by the government, this advisory denotes that your safety and security could be at risk.

“You should think about your need to travel to this country, territory or region based on family or business requirements, knowledge of or familiarity with the region, and other factors. If you are already there, think about whether you really need to be there. If you do not need to be there, you should think about leaving.”

Travellers are advised to exercise extra caution if they are in any of the affected areas. It is also important to follow the instructions of local authorities, as well as keep on eye on the warnings and alerts from the Bureau of Meteorology.

The Bureau of Meteorology notes that Tropical Cyclone Narelle will bring wind gusts of up to 285 km/hour, with sustained winds near the centre of 205 km/hour.

If you plan on going to Australia, be sure to follow the advice given by the Government of Canada to ensure your safety. You can also visit the advisory webpage for more information.
