There are a number of spooky urban legends in Vancouver; however, the story behind Port Moody’s ghost town, Ioco, is fascinating.

Located in the Burrard Inlet across from Port Moody, was originally created as a shanty town for workers on an oil refinery.

At that time, it only housed 200 people, as well as a school and two grocery stores. As time passed, the community cleared the land and began building house.

During the 20s, the community expanded to include 83 houses. In addition, there was a community hall, a grocery store, a tennis court a lawn bowling green, as well as 2 churches.

The name Ioco is an abbreviation for “Imperial Oil Corporation,” and it was common during this era to develop a town based around an industry.

The City of Port Moody is celebrates it’s rich history every year by hosting an Ioco Ghost Town Day to commemorate their popular ghost town. The event usually includes a Ioco Ghost Walk, telling bone chilling tales of this historical treasure!

The event provides an engaging historical walk with a former Ioco resident.

The fun annual festival offers 20+ local vendors and community organizations’ displays, as well as live music and entertainment.

What’s more, guest may enjoy guided trolley tours of the townsite and much more! Kids will also have a great time with many different games and activities, including pony rides.
