For one Vancouver man, dreams have become reality. After purchasing a couple of lottery tickets and a Bubly sparkling water from a 7-Eleven, he’s become $40 million richer.

And he almost forgot to check the ticket, too.

A GUT FEELING

It was in late May that Phuc Duc (Daniel) Chau purchased two very important items from the 7-Eleven on Imperial Street and Boundary Road in Burnaby. A drink, for one; and then a Lotto Max ticket that has since netted him his millions of dollars.

There wasn’t anything in particular that made Chau want to buy the ticket. He attributed it to gut feeling, saying that “something really pushed me to buy that ticket without any planning.”

He ended up checking the tickets he bought while at work. He had completely forgotten them in his bag for three weeks. When he reached into the bottom of his bag for a cough drop, he found the tickets.

The first was a loss, but then the second came up with a bunch of zeroes. It was a $40 million win, and so naturally Chau immediately dropped his phone in shock and then went to call BCLC right away.

“I have never seen that many zeroes in my life,” said Chau.

LIFE-CHANGING

For Chau and his winnings, he plans on supporting his community, family, and the people around him. “I want to contribute back to the community because I knw this might be a life-changing experience to me, and I want to use a part of it to change other people’s life as well,” said Chau.

He also wants to travel the world, although he hasn’t quite decided where to start. And he’s unsure if he will quit his job or not.

Whatever he ends up deciding on, Chau and his partner are “walking on cloud nine” right now. All that’s left to do is tell his parents and find a financial planner.
