Vancouver’s Transit System Named Best In North America

On Wednesday, TransLink was recognized as the best public transit system provider in North America.

The public transit provider was announced as the winner of the 2019 Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA).

Translink won the major transit system category that provides 20 million or more passenger trips annually.

“System nominations cover a three-year period (2016-2018) and the nomination should reflect the achievements in that specific time frame”, reads the APTA website.

Factors that were considered in the voting process include:

  • Ridership growth
  • Operational efficiency
  • Maintenance initiatives
  • Customer service
  • Financial management
  • Marketing
  • Sustainability

Between 2016 and 2018, TransLink’s ridership figures grew 18% and the transit provider experienced record-highs in on-time performance. Likewise, ridership growth during this period outpaced every other public transit system in Canada and the United States.

In an open letter, TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond thanked everyone for “putting your trust in us”.

“While the award recognizes the work that has been done to improve our organization’s customer service, on-time performance, and efficiency – the real recognition should go to you, TransLink’s customers”.

Just this year alone, TransLink has announced a new RapidBus service, new Canada Line SkyTrain cars, double-decker buses, and even plans for a new SkyTrain extension in Surrey that’ll only improve their service even more.
