A new ranking list has just revealed a Vancouver Island town as being one of Canada’s top growth cities in 2025. Quaint and charming, this seaside spot has been welcoming enough people to make it into the top 25.

U-Haul Growth Index
This data comes from the U-Haul Growth Index, a list that ranks city growth each year.
“U-Haul ranks provinces and cities by their net gain (or loss) of customers who rented a one-way truck, trailer or U-Box® moving containers in one province or city proper and dropped off their equipment in another province or city proper,” noted the Index on its growth formula. “The U-Haul Growth Index is compiled from well over 2.5 million annual one-way transactions across Canada and the U.S.”
The ranking may not directly correlate to population or economic growth, but it is an effective way to gauge “how well provinces and cities are attracting and maintaining residents.”
2025’s Numbers
According to this year’s ranking, Alberta is the number one growth province, with Calgary as the number one U-Haul Canadian growth city. This is the third year in a row that the province and city have claimed this top spot.
“Alberta continues to stay at the top of the U-Haul Growth Index because of the strong job market, lower cost of living, high wages, and the abundance of outdoor recreation,” Razmin Mansoub, U-Haul Area District Vice President for Western Canada, said.

But BC isn’t far behind. At second place, people are reportedly moving to BC because of its natural beauty, tempered climate, and strong education system. These factors are big pulls for young couples and families. Naturally, Victoria sits at fourth place on the Canadian Growth Cities ranking. Vancouver is a little lower at seventh place.
Sidney, BC
And at 24th is one unexpected town: Sidney, BC.. The numbers don’t lie, though: the U-Haul Growth Index shows that people are packing up things and renting a one-way truck all the way to this seaside town. Considering it’s only 30 minutes away from Victoria and a ferry ride from Vancouver, Sidney is an ideal spot to settle down if you love the sights of the water.

The Sidney website writes that “Sidney has a vibrant and pedestrian-friendly downtown that offers a variety of stores, specialty shops and businesses, including a cinema and local breweries.”
Packed with natural beauty, a small-town atmosphere, and cozy vibes, Sidney is clearly becoming one of Canada’s top locations to move to.
