The BC film industry continues its momentum from June into summer  with a number of Hollywood blockbusters, Chinese films, independent projects and television movies scheduled for production.

Meagan Good returns to Vancouver after filming FOX’s Miniority Report here which was cancelled after one season. In this psychological thriller, a young couple moves into their dream home but has to deal with the previous owner. The screenplay is from David Loughrey who is known for Lakeview Terrance and Obsessed.

The 1987 comedy-classic starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russel gets a remake. Lots of filming has been taking place in the Steveston area of Richmond where ABC’s Once Upon a Time has used as a main setting over the years.

The sequel to the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time is underway in Vancouver and looks to make more of the city famous like it did the Georgia viaduct and Number 5 Orange. ‘Vancity Reynolds’ welcomes Josh Brolin to the cast as Cable.

Richard Says Goodbye


Starring: Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp returns to Vancouver after shooting additional scenes for the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie in North Vancouver last year. He also shot the 1980’s hit TV show 21 Jump Street here. He plays a college professor in Richard Says Goodbye who receives a “life-changing diagnosis” and dives into every vice possible.

Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers, Dodgeball) laces up his dramatic boots for this crime movie as a young policeman alongside Mel Gibson (Braveheart, Lethal Weapon) as the veteran cop. The pair get caught in a media firestorm over their ‘serve & protect’ ways and get pulled deeper into the criminal underworld.

Hong Kong filmmaker Felix Chong, known for the Chinese film series Infernal Affairs which was adapted into Hollywood’s The Departed, shoots  in Vancouver this July. Project Gutenberg, known locally under its project title “One of a Kind” filmed in Hong Kong this spring with additional shooting scheduled for Canada and Thailand. It’s about a Hong Kong police case following currency counterfeiters through a gang.

From married filmmakers Anthony Epp and Helena Thorn comes 13 Miles which they wrote and direct together. It’s an independent Canadian sports drama about human identity and centers around a triathlon champion and the woman by his side.

Hong Kong filmmaker Yuen Leung Calvin Poon is shooting Fatal Visit around town throughout July. *The cast and film details were unknown at the time of publishing.

TV Movies

Last month was big for TV movies in town as Psych filmed its holiday special, Catherine Zeta-Jones played Cocaine Godmother and Katharine McPhee was in town.

August is going to be hot as well as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be in town filming Skyscraper, a China-set action movie. Canadian actress Neve Campbell has just been added to the cast; she is known for series like House of Cards, Mad Men and Party of Five and the Scream film franchise.
