JJ Bean has been a part of Vancouver’s coffee history for a long time. The coffee shop has been a staple of the city since 1996, run by the Neate family.
Although the Neates themselves have been roasting coffee for far longer than that, what with Frank Neate beginning his coffee journey in 1945 after emigrating from Wales. His wife, Ella Neate, made the donuts that went with the coffee. Together, they formed Neates Coffee. Eventually, JJ Bean was born. But as they began to focus more on coffee, the donuts got set aside for a time.
Now, the owner of JJ Bean John Neate is opening a new donut-focused shop with a heavy emphasis on their homemade dough.

JJ Bean isn’t new to the donut scene. They’ve been serving donuts with their coffee since 2023, but Neate Donuts is going to be way more donut-oriented than JJ Bean has ever been.

They’ve aimed to hit the shining standards of Vancouver’s beloved Lee’s Donuts with their classic glazed donut. And after a lot of trial and error and experimentation, both Neate and JJ Bean Bakery Leader Julie Trottier are now satisfied with their made-from-scratch donuts.
THE MENU
The best part of any donut shop is looking at all the flavours on offer. Neate Donuts is absolutely no exception. With 12 donut flavours available each day, there will always be something new to try. Their offerings extend from the comforting classics to their more creative creations.
For the classic lovers, they will have Glazed, as well as Chocolate Glazed flavours. They’ve also got Raspberry Jelly, Boston Cream, and much more.
If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can try their seasonal flavours as well. They’ll have Lavender Earl Grey and Banana Cream Pie, as well as a rich Dubai Chocolate. You can also try their limited-quantity “Benny & The Donut”, which is a savory donut filled with all the fixings of an Eggs Benedict.
Neate Donuts has already had their soft opening this week. Their Grand Opening will be on Monday, May 5. If you come from May 5 to May 8, you can also get their special promotion of six donuts for $15 or a dozen for $24 in celebration of their opening.
