HelloFresh: Cheese Recall

The recall concerns certain cheeses that were included in HelloFresh meal kits. This includes shredded parmesan cheese, cheese curds, feta cheese, goat cheese, and mozzarella cheese.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) reports that “the affected products are being recalled from the marketplace due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.” While food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not appear or smell spoiled, they can still make you sick. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness.

Pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk when it comes to Listeria monocytogenes. “Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth,” says the CFIA.

In more severe cases of illness, people may also die.

The CFIA is currently conducting a food safety investigation into the matter, which could potentially lead to the recall of other products. The agency is also verifying that the industry is removing the recalled products from the marketplace.

What To Do

Consumers are advised to check if they have the recalled products. If they do, the products should either be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.

“Do not consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute recalled products.”

If you believe you have become sick from consuming the recalled products, you are advised to contact your healthcare provider.
