Tax season is coming up in Canada and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is gearing up for another busy time.

In 2025, the agency received much criticism for long wait times, as well as some less-than-helpful advice from its representatives. With previous call volumes hitting more than 32 million, peaking at 300,000 a day, the CRA is aiming to make your tax season as smooth as possible with improved operations and streamlined processes.

Changes To The CRA

The majority of the changes have come to the CRA My Account. This account allows you to view or update your personal information, check your refund or return status, as well as access your notice of assessment of proof of income statement.

In 2026, you will also now be able to manage your balance or amount owing, and set up a payment plan without having to speak to anyone. And if you’ve been locked out of your account, you can now regain access through security questions instead of calling the helpline.

New CRA account-makers no longer have to wait to receive login credentials, either. Officially, you can just verify your identify with government-issued identification.

And do you remember the CRA’s $18 million chatbot, Charlie? He’s being retired as of this year, and is now being replaced with a generative AI chatbot that was launched last March.

Things To Know About Tax Season

The CRA has a long article detailing practically everything you need to know about this year’s upcoming tax season. From what to do before you call to getting more information, it’s all there.

Here’s a few dates you should take note of:

  • April 30 is the deadline for most individuals to file their 2025 income tax and benefit return and pay any taxes owed.
  • June 15 is the deadline for self-employed individuals to file their 2025 income tax and benefit return.
