According to Statistics Canada, there were 372,521 births in 2025, an increase of 1.6% when compared with 2024’s numbers. There were also slightly more boys (51.3%) born than girls (48.7%), a statistic similar to previous years.

But what did all these parents name these babies? And what’s at the top of the list?

For the fifth year in a row, Noah is the most popular name for boys. In 2025 alone, 2,190 boys were named as such.

But something particularly interesting has happened for girl’s names: for nine years, Olivia was always Canada’s number-one name for newborn girls. In fact, 2024 saw 1,639 babies named Olivia brought into the world.

Now, Olivia has officially been dethroned as Charlotte is now the top baby girl name in Canada at least for 2025. 1,502 baby girls were named Charlotte last year, with Olivia following in second place with 1,445.

Baby Names In Other Decades

Looking back at other decades, there are certainly some differences.

As for 2015, you can see that Noah and Olivia are both a few spots below being number-one. The top baby name also had considerably more babies named that year. Comparing the two top girl’s names from 2025 and 2015, there’s a difference of 880 babies given each respective name.

In 2005, it looks like Emma was once again the reigning champ for girl’s names. Boy’s names seem a little more variable, with Ethan taking the top spot as opposed to Liam or Noah. Notably, Liam isn’t even in the top 10 for 2005– it’s actually in 13th.

And for 1995, Matthew and Jessica were at the top of the list. There’s no sign of Noah, Olivia, or Charlotte within the top 10, either.

Over the decades, it’s clear that Canada’s preference for names has changed quite a bit. And now with Charlotte outranking Olivia for the first time in nine years, even more naming trends may see some changes.
