BC Hydro is offering customers the chance to claim a $100 credit as long as they cut down on their electricity use. Advertised as “use less, get rewarded”, you can now save even more money by taking up BC Hydro on their Reduction Challenge.

BC Hydro $100 Customer Credit

Returning once more is Team Power Smart’s Reduction Challenge. This challenge has customers pledging that they will cut their electricity use by 10% over the next year. Those who achieve this feat can then earn a $100 credit– double the usual $50 reward.

“As we move into the colder, darker months, electricity bills often rise due to increased heating, lighting, and appliance use,” said Susie Rieder, BC Hydro spokesperson. “For many customers, especially those in apartments or smaller homes, this reward could cover a full month or more of electricity costs. And by reducing your energy use, you’ll also see ongoing savings on your monthly bills.”

In 2024, more than 75,000 British Columbians claimed the reward. This resulted in not only some great monetary savings, but also energy savings. 19 gigawatt hours were gained, “enough to power more than 2,500 homes for a year.”

How To Succeed In The Reduction Challenge

Wondering how you can succeed in the Reduction Challenge? Here are BC Hydro’s tips:

  • “Using a programmable thermostat to reduce heating when you are asleep or away.
  • Sealing drafts around windows and doors to prevent heat loss.
  • Switching to LED bulbs, they use up to 75 per cent less energy than incandescent ones.
  • Using energy-efficient appliances.
  • Installing low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators.
  • Washing clothes in cold water, it is just as effective and saves energy.
  • Using smaller appliances such as an air fryer, microwave, toaster oven, or slow cooker instead of the oven when possible.”

To enter, just sign into your online BC Hydro account and pledge to take the challenge so you can get that customer credit. You can sign up today here to join all the other folks who are working to keep their electricity usage low.
