Thinking of going on a holiday getaway? If so, it’s important to know that the Government of Canada has recently issued some urgent travel advice for all Canadians heading out-of-country this winter.

Travel Advice For Canadians

Published by Global Affairs Canada, the news release notes a number of things that are important for travellers to know– and remember– before they head on their flight, ship, or jump into the car to head past the borders.

They especially emphasize Canadians to “follow the 3 Rs of international travel.” This includes:

  • Read Canada’s destination specific Travel Advice and Advisories.
  • Register with the free Registration of Canadians Abroad service.
  • Reach the Government of Canada in case of an emergency at your destination by keeping contact information for Government of Canada offices abroad and their Emergency Watch and Response centre close at hand.

Staying Safe, Insured, and Healthy

The release also asks Canadians to keep some more general advice in mind while travelling. This includes things like getting travel insurance, which you should always select based on your own needs. “Take time to compare your options and to verify the terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions and requirements of the insurance policy before leaving Canada.”

Here are a few more tips that the Government of Canada recommends:

  • Staying healthy is important. Be sure to read the health section in the Travel Advice for your destination and book a check-up with your doctor to get any recommended or required vaccinations.
  • Have all your necessary documents, keep them safe, and make sure your passport is valid for the required period that you are abroad. This also includes ensuring you have a visa of electronic travel authorization prior to your trip, if necessary.
  • Ensure that children travelling alone; with only 1 parent or guardian; with friends or relatives; or with a group, have a consent letter or any other appropriate documentation.
  • Know the local laws.
  • Never carry, buy or use illegal drugs under any circumstance.
