With Spring in full-swing, night market season is coming in hot. It seems like every area of the Lower Mainland has its own night market these days. Now, everyone is able to enjoy their community’s offerings within their own locality.

Unfortunately, there’s one night market that won’t be opening this year.

CLOSED-UP

The Fort Langley Night Market is known for a lot of things. Community, fun, good food and good music– that sort of thing. It’s a lively market that has everything you could ever wish for in an event meant to bring people together.

But people always love to spoil the fun. The organizers announced recently on Instagram that they will not be continuing the Fort Langley Night Market this year.

They wrote, “After careful consideration, we regret to announce that the Fort Langley Night Market will not be continuing this year. This decision was not made lightly, as the Night Market has been a vibrant and cherished event for our community.”

Many people have expressed their disappointment and sadness at the cancellation of such a beloved event. While much gratitude was given as well, it is hard to deny how unfortunate this news is.

TROUBLEMAKERS

So, why is the Fort Langley Night Market closing up shop? Well, because some people thought it would be great to bring in outside alcohol and also vandalize the event site.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

In their statement, the organizers explain that, “We encountered several challenges that have impacted the Night Market’s ability to operate as a safe and enjoyable event for all.” This includes those folks who were bringing in alcohol from outside, which “detracted from the family-friendly environment [the organizers] strive to maintain.” Reportedly, there was also damage to the site.

Simply put, the organizers couldn’t put the community and themselves on the line for people who want to ruin everyone else’s fun. There were too many instances where these violators were warned but did not heed them, leading to the ultimate closure of the Night Market. In order to keep everybody safe and healthy, this was the only choice.

While it is possible that the organizers will explore more opportunities to connect with the Langley community, the Night Market will no longer be one of those avenues.
