If you’re a driver in Vancouver, parking is probably something that’s constantly a problem, particularly at big events like the annual PNE.
Parking at the PNE costs $20 to $25, but there’s a lesser-known way to bypass that.
You know how the PNE is kind of surrounded by residential neighbourhoods, such as Hastings Park?
You know how residential homes have driveways?
Did you know you can park in them?
You can park in them, that is, as long as you reach an agreement with the owner of the property.
And the best part is that it’s perfectly, 100%, legal, as long as certain rules aren’t broken.
The first rule is that the spot cannot be on the street. That’s about it. There are limits as to how many cars can be parked at once (based on the size of the property), but that isn’t as restrictive as it sounds, because garages and lawns are all also fair-game.
This isn’t yet a mainstream option, but it’s rising in popularity, so much so that’s become somewhat a small cottage industry.
Don’t be surprised if you’re in the area and you see people on the streets trying to get your attention.
That also happens to be perfectly legal, so long as they aren’t disturbing or distracting traffic.
When you do find a spot you like, however, just get ready to use your haggling skills.
And…that’s it! Now you can check out all the concerts, the wacky food, and everything else the PNE has to offer, with that extra bit of dough you saved. (And don’t forget to pair this tip with free admission days to save even more money.)
