Metro Vancouver’s infamous Grouse Grind trail is closing for a month, much to the dismay of hikers across the city.

If you were planning on heading up the mountain sometime soon, here’s what you should know so you don’t bump into a closed sign at the starting line.

The Grouse Grind, located in North Vancouver, is one of the most famous hikes in Metro Vancouver.

It’s a super steep walk that starts at 300 metres elevation and takes you to 1,100 metres upward, a distance of around 2.5 kilometres in total. Physical fitness is imperative for those who wish to tackle the hike. Don’t expect any flat sections– it’s a straight shot up.

But there’s not much time left in October to challenge the Grouse Grind as it will be closed for four weeks very soon. Starting on October 13 and running until November 10, the trail will be closed for annual maintenance work.

Crews will be working to repair and replace steps, as well as staircases and retaining walls.

Even though the Grouse Grind won’t be available for part of October and November, hikers can still take on the BCMC Route. The City of Metro Vancouver recommends this alternate trail as it offers a similar challenge, and ends at the same destination as the Grouse Grind.

“If you choose this route, wear hiking shoes with good ankle support, wear warm layers, and bring plenty of water and snacks,” notes Metro Vancouver. “Plan ahead and hike safely. ”
