Be careful which sandy spots you head to this fall because Canada has just announced some more travel advisories for certain countries.

If you’ve been thinking of escaping the chill and instead basking in the sun, be aware of what advisories are live for your next destination.

Canada Travel Advisories

The Government of Canada has four distinct levels that travel advisories are separated into. It ranges all the way from taking normal precautions to avoiding all travel. In the middle, Canadians are informed to either exercise a high degree of caution or avoid non-essential travel.

While many popular destinations remain in the green, there are some that may make you want to put your vacation plans on ice.

5 Popular Beach Destinations Under A Travel Advisory

  • Costa Rica: Exercise a high degree of caution
  • Dominican Republic: Exercise a high degree of caution
  • Turks and Caicos Islands: Exercise a high degree of caution
  • Jamaica: Avoid non-essential travel
  • Mexico: Exercise a high degree of caution (with regional advisories)

The majority of these locations have problems with petty crime, often targeting tourists during peak seasons. Passport theft is an especially important issue to be aware of as a tourist, as well as drive-by robberies where thieves will snatch valuables while riding by on motorcycles, scooters, or bicycles.

Other incidents like violent crime, spiked drinks and food, and assaults should also be things that travelers keep an eye out for. Fraud, too, occurs frequently.

Jamaica is currently under a high-level travel advisory. Canadians should avoid all non-essential travel to the country as the area is experiencing a natural disaster. Tropical Storm Melissa is soon to sweep through Jamaica, and is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane by this weekend or early next week.
