The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has just issued an urgent recall across Canada regarding baby formula. This warning was last updated on November 14, and urges the public to not consume the affected products due to the potential presence of a deadly bacteria.
Baby Formula Recall Across Canada
The recall concerns ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula, specifically in the 238g and 680g sizes. The CFIA notes that the affected products may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, which can cause botulism.

Foods contaminated with Clostridium botulinum may not always look like they are spoiled. But, they can still make you quite sick. In adults, it can induce a number of serious health risks, including:
- Facial paralysis/loss of facial expression
- Unreactive or fixed pupils
- Difficulty swallowing
- Drooping eyelids
- Blurred or double vision
- Difficulty speaking/slurred speech
- Change in sound of voice (including hoarseness)
Foodborne botulism can cause difficulty swallowing, slurred speech, and generalized weakness and paralysis. Botulism does not cause fevers. But in more severe cases, people may die.
What To Do
If you think you have become sick due to consuming an affected product, the CFIA recommends that you contact your healthcare provider. “Do not consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute affected products,” the CFIA urges.
The CFIA is currently conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. The warning was triggered by a recall in the United States. As of now, there have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products in Canada.
