Changes are coming to how often B.C. employers can ask you for a sick note. In order to lift the weight from health-care providers, the B.C. government is limiting when bosses can demand proof of illness from employees, through a doctor
These changes will be implemented effective immediately.
Sick Note Changes To B.C. Employers
As of now, employers cannot ask for a sick note for a worker’s first two health-related and short-term absences of five consecutive days or fewer in a calendar year.
“When you’re sick with the flu, or your child comes down with a cold, the last thing you should have to do is go to your doctor or a medical clinic to get a piece of paper saying you’re sick,” said Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Labour. “Unnecessary medical appointments take time away from patients who need to see their doctors and nurses, don’t help people get better any faster and risk further spread of illness.”

These changes to B.C.’s sick note policies are based on input from health-care providers, who have said that most minor illnesses in adults are typically resolved within five days.
Helping Health-Care Provides
It’s no secret that B.C.’s health-care system is suffering beneath shortages, burnout, and a myriad of other symptoms. With the limitation of sick notes, the “unnecessary administrative burdens” are lightened on doctors so that they may focus on caring for patients.
“These changes help ensure the province’s health-care professionals, such as physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists and midwives, can focus on patient care, not paperwork.”
The new rules will not only cut back on administrative time for doctors, but also allow them to spend more time with their patients. Moreover, it will let workers get the rest they need without worrying about contacting their health-provider.
