Another restaurant closure has just hit Metro Vancouver, but this time it’s not due to a lack of customers, expensive rent, or anything else expected.

Surrey’s Baba Chicken recently announced its temporary closure due to landlord-imposed restrictions, “stemming from discomfort expressed by a neighbouring bank.”

Baba Chicken Closure

Baba Chicken is a chain of restaurants that has been growing across Western Canada, emphasizing Punjabi flavours that come particularly from Ludhiana, a city located in Northern India. Their website notes that customers get to “experience the true taste of India and savour the authenticity of [their] renowned Baba Chicken.”

In a recent social post, the restaurant announced that they would be temporarily shutting down their kitchen located on 7322 King George Blvd due to complaints about the food’s aroma. According to the post, a neighbouring bank had expressed discomfort from the smell, ultimately leading to the shutdown from the business’ landlord.

“Our heart weeps. What was meant to be a season of warmth, gratitude, and togetherness turned into silence and heartbreak. Christmas turned black for us when we were forced to shutdown as an act of racism,” wrote Baba Chicken on Instagram. “We never knew there could be someone above the law[.] The food aroma which makes people happy turned out to be a trouble for some.”

A Reopening?

As of now, it is unclear when Baba Chicken may be reopening. The restaurant explained that they will be “fight[ing] for a fair and reasonable resolution” and asked for their customers’ continued support and understanding as they navigate their shutdown.

“Our years of hard work, dreams, and livelihoods paused without mercy and destroying livelihood of many families. We stand here grieving, yet holding on to faith that light will find us again.”
