If you’re heading to Japan soon, you may want to practice extra caution as the federal government has just issued a travel warning for Canadians heading overseas.

Japan Travel Warning
According to the federal government, Tropical Storm Surigae (also known as “Queenie”) is expected to affect the Ryukyu Islands in Japan, which are a chain of islands that stretch from Kyushu to Taiwan. They are divided into the Kagoshima Prefecture and Okinawa Prefecture.
Tropical Storm Surigae was last located around 1,200km east of Northern Luzon in the Philippines. It has also been recorded as having sustained winds of 75 km/h.
Between September 26 to 28, “the storm is likely to bring excessive rainfall and violent winds. It may cause flash flooding and landslides.” Additionally, it may severely disrupt essential services, including:
- transportation
- power distribution
- water and food supply
- telecommunications networks
- emergency services
- medical care
Those in the affected area are advised to exercise caution, as well as monitor local news and weather reports. In the case of emergency, you should also follow the instructions of local authorities.
