ICBC recently stated that an all-time high of 350,000 automobile crashes took place in 2017. As a result, police stepped up their distracted driving enforcement throughout Metro Vancouver in order to crack down on offenders.
One of the ways they are cracking down is by increasing fines for those caught breaking the law. Specifically, a driver caught twice in a three year period will receive up to $2,000 in fines as well as points. Not only will repeat offenders incur this enormous fine, but additional offences could mean a revoked license. They may not be able to drive for 3 months up to year.
While ICBC attributes distraction, speed and aggressive driving habits to the increase in crashes, a lack of knowledge may play a key role in why there are so many accidents. As a result, many people feel that the provider should hold mandatory re-testing in order to prevent accidents in the future.
