The City of Vancouver and Vancouver Whitecaps FC have just signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for an exclusive new stadium project

The stadium and entertainment district, which would be at Hastings Park, “marks a significant step toward creating a world-class sports and cultural destination for residents and visitors.”

Hastings Racecourse Park

The proposed stadium and entertainment district would be built at Hastings Racecourse Park. This news comes just one week after Great Canadian Entertainment announced that it would be shutting down its horse racing.

Wayne Odegard, regional vice-president at Great Canadian Entertainment, said in a news release, “This was an extremely difficult decision, especially given the historical legacy of Hastings Racecourse in the local community and its importance to the province’s racing industry.”

But with the signing of the MOU between the City of Vancouver and Whitecaps FC, Hastings Park could have new life breathed into it in the form of a new stadium and cultural hotspot. Through December 31, 2025, the City and Whitecaps FC will be working collaboratively to negotiate terms for a ground lease. This includes the stadium’s design, financial terms and community benefits.

A Big Year For The Whitecaps

While the Whitecaps didn’t take home the trophy, being beaten out by Inter Miami 3-1, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim says that this year has been remarkable for the Whitecaps.

“After an incredible year that saw the Whitecaps reach the MLS Cup Final for the first time in club history, it’s clear just how much this team means to our city… The partnership we are building today has the potential to create jobs, boost our local economy, and transform Hastings Park into an even more vibrant destination for sports, concerts, and community events.”

The stadium planning is currently in its early stages. Design proposals for the site are the next steps, as well as intensified negotiations for a potential ground lease.
