Many American airports are being significantly impacted by the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) reduction in U.S. domestic flights due to reduced air traffic controller (ATT) availability. This means travellers should expect cancellations and delays to their upcoming U.S. flights.
U.S. Flight Cancellations
As of November 12, the U.S. government has been shut down for 42 days. This marks President Donald Trump’s administration as having the longest government shutdown in American history. The second longest was during Trump’s first run as President back in 2018-2019.

Due to the shutdown, many government services are being heavily impacted. Included in this is the aviation sector, especially ATTs. Due to this, airlines and passengers have experienced a number of delays, cancellations, and increased wait times at airports.
“Contact your airline to understand if your travel plans are affected,” says the Government of Canada website on the United States travel advice page.
How Are Canadians Affected?
New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago are among some of the airport locations that are affected by the flight cuts. Many of the busiest hubs are being particularly affected as well, such as Dallas, Orlando, Atlanta, and Denver.
Since Canadian airlines operate thousands of flights to the U.S. on a weekly basis, Canadians planning on flying cross-border should be prepared for a change in schedule. Airlines like Air Canada say it is allowing customers that are connected with United to change or defer their travel with no change fee.

Moreover, Porter Airlines has said that the FAA staffing disruptions have caused delays.
Either way, if you’re planning on flying to, or around, major U.S. airports, there’s a chance that your flight will be affected. Be sure to check with your airline to see if your U.S flight is experiencing any cancellations or delays.
