In a post shared by the Tumbler Ridge Chamber of Commerce Facebook account, parents of Tumbler Ridge victim Kylie Smith said that their celebration of life for Smith had to be cancelled due to safety concerns.
The family has reportedly been receiving threats from a “very dangerous person,” with the service being postponed in order to mitigate any further risk of violence in Tumbler Ridge.
Tumbler Ridge: “At Least The Third Family”
Smith’s parents, Lance Younge and Jenny Geary, note in the post that they are safe. They have been moved to a safe location and their home is being looked after and protected. They go on to say that the police are well-aware of the situation and are helping them through it.
“We are SO SORRY we had to cancel Kylie’s service today. We saw how hard everyone was working on it,” said the parents. “From what we are hearing, we are at least the third family of the deceased to be harassed or threatened by people from their past since this awful tragedy took place.”
In a statement from RCMP Staff Sergeant Kris Clark, they have said that “the RCMP is aware of threats that have circulated online and within the community and we can confirm that an investigation is underway. A safety plan is in place for the individual(s) and community as the investigation continues.”
Younge and Geary apologize to the community for all the hard work they had put into the service. “The caterers, the businesses that were closing out of respect, the people who took time off work, we are so sorry. We couldn’t risk any more violence in this amazing town.”
“Mostly, we are sorry to you, Kylie. Our girl. This was supposed to be your day. I promise we will give you the most lovely, beautiful event when the time is right.”
