From Monday October 5, to Friday October 9, children across metro Vancouver will be participating in International Walk To School Week. Also referred to as IWALK, the annual global event is a mass celebration of active transportation.
In recognition of the event, Translink is inviting both elementary and high school students (with a GoCard) to ride all Translink services free of charge throughout the week.
While using vehicle transportation technically goes against what IWALK promotes, Translink states that “both walking and taking transit promote good health and independence, while keeping greenhouse gases to a minimum”
Translink is also encouraging teachers to take advantage of the offer and organize field trips during the week as school hours fall between off-peak hours (between 9:30am and 2:30pm).
Adults accompanying students will still need to pay their transit fare during IWALK week.
