This B.C. Seafood Is Being Urgently Recalled Due To A Serious Norovirus Contamination

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) have just issued a recall notice for a brand of B.C. seafood.

Due to a potential norovirus contamination, the CFIA is asking all consumers to immediately stop using, consuming, selling, serving, and distributing the product.

B.C. Oysters Recall

The recall concerns Stellar Bay Shellfish brand Oysters sold in B.C.. According to the CFIA, “the affected products are being recalled from the marketplace due to possible norovirus contamination.”

Norovirus is a serious illness that develops symptoms of gastroenteritis within 24 to 48 hours, although symptoms can start as early as 12 hours after exposure. Usually, the illness begins suddenly. The CFIA notes that even after having the illness, you can still become re-infected by norovirus.

“The main symptoms of norovirus illness are diarrhea, vomiting (children usually experience more vomiting than adults), nausea and stomach cramps. Other symptoms may include low-grade fever, headache, chills, muscle aches and fatigue (a general sense of tiredness).”

People generally feel better within one or two days as the symptoms resolve on their own, and experience no long-term health effects. The CFIA recommends people with norovirus drink plenty of liquids to replace lost body fluids and prevent dehydration. Severer cases of norovirus may require patients to be hospitalized and given fluids intravenously.

If you have any of the affected products, the CFIA advises the following:

• If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, contact your healthcare provider
• Check to see if you have recalled products
• Do not consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute recalled products
• Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased
