‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Title Has Unintended Vancouver Roots

Star-Wars

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

About a decade ago, Vancouver-based videographer Dan Lalonde made an epic Star Wars fan film about a Canadian Jedi. The 50-minute amateur film was titled… The Force Awakens:

The full length film has been blocked on YouTube on copyright grounds. Its local production was written and directed by Dan Lalonde and starred Chris Allen, Lana Tillyer, Bill Hogg, Jeff Amos, Saeid Faramarzi and Dwayne Bamber. The 2006 fan film was set in present day and centered around a Canadian guy who discovers Jedi-abilities.

And the big creative thought behind the title? Well the main character ‘awakens the force’ by saving his girlfriend from a meteor.

In a 2014 interview with Yahoo Movies, Lalonde described his movie as “kind of crappy” but doesn’t deny how awesome and funny it is to have come up with the same title as the Disney blockbuster.

Editor note: I may or may not have made a short video titled Toy Story 3 in my Grade 10 Visual Media Arts class years before the third installment of the Toy Story franchise in 2010.
