This is a big day for film enthusiasts and VFX fanatics alike. Set to open a new LED Volume stage in Metro Vancouver is Sony’s VFX firm Pixomondo.

And if you know anything about Pixomondo, then you’re going to be thrilled that our West Coast city is hosting a powerhouse of VFX technology.

PIXOMONDO

Pixomondo is a worldrenown visual effects company that has accolades in plenty of films, television shows, and commercials. They have studios all over the world, including one in Vancouver.

With this new firm opening, there will be even more of a reason for filmmakers to come to Metro Vancouver. Every Vancouverite knows that the city is known as “Hollywood North” due to its large film industry. And it seems like many films have used the city itself as a backdrop for other cities. But Sony’s Pixomondo firm will bring even more eyes to Metro Vancouver.

A NEW WAY TO FILM

Opening on May 26, this facility will be run by PXO Clara. You might know them as Pixomondo’s LED Volumes division that worked on Hugo, The Boys series, and John Wick: Chapter 4. Suffice it to say, they’re an impressive division that has extensive experience in the VFX game.

The standout feature of this new facility is its Volume stage. A Volume stage is a deep, concave semicircle that is meant to encircle actors and additional set pieces to create a virtual environment. The resulting effect is a digital background that looks convincingly real. The Mandalorian was the first to utilize this stage style to great effect.

For those of you who like to know all the numbers, the stage will be 23 feet tall and 50 feet in diameter, and that semi-circle will be 14 feet deep. Two additional 20 feet wide and 16.5 feet tall movable walls provide easy access when scenes need to be repositioned.

Such technology provides films with different avenues in filmmaking. It combines both realism and virtual production to pull you into those fictional film worlds.

The new Volume stage will be opening in Langley, so be sure to keep an eye out for when it does!
