Lights, Camera, Action! 20+ Movies That Filmed in Vancouver This Year

The BC film industry was booming this year! From sci-fi to rom-com and big screen to Netflix, all types of movies filmed in Vancouver.

Some big movies and big stars graced Hollywood North in 2018 including Nicolas Cage, Olivia Munn, Chris Hemsworth, Jeff Bridges, Dakota Johnson, Jon Hamm, Aubrey Plaza, Keri Russell, Gina Carano, Jacob Tremblay, Ben Platt, Adam Beach, Freida Pinto, Anna Kendrick, James Marsden, Jim Carrey, Katherine Langford, Amanda Seyfried, Milo Ventimiglia and more.

A Score To Settle

The one and only Nic Cage filmed this revenge action-thriller flick in the Okanagan this summer. He plays a convicted mob enforcer and fall-guy, with terminal illness, set on revenge after being released from prison.


2 Hearts

Australian actress Radha Mitchell is no stranger to Vancouver having filmed the series Red Widow and movie The Shack here before. She stars in this coming of age story alongside Vancouver’s own Tiera Skovbye – known for playing Polly Cooper in Riverdale and Robin in Once Upon a Time.

Always Be My Maybe

This Ali Wong and Randall Park project unites the two comedians on screen in a romantic comedy for Netflix. They are both involved in ABC’s sitcom Fresh Off The Boat which Wong writes for and Park stars in. Park previously filmed in Vancouver for The Interview with James Franco and Seth Rogen.

Keanus Reeves and Daniel Dae Kim were both added to the cast. Kim is known for his role in Lost and for being an Executive Producer behind the Vancouver-filmed medical drama The Good Doctor.

Korean actress Vivian Bang and Deadpool’s Karan Soni also star.



Shape of Water Director Guillermo del Toro was exploring Vancouver back in June ahead of his next fantasy horror movie which shot in town this fall. It’s about a teacher who discovers supernatural horror starring Jesse Plemons and Keri Russell

Bad Times at the El Royale

This neo-noir thriller has a stellar cast: Chris Hemsworth, Dakota Johnson, Jeff Bridges, Russell Crowe, Jon Hamm, Nick Offerman, Cailee Spaeny and Cynthia Erivo

This R-rated teen comedy is produced by none other than Vancouver’s Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Gut Instinct

Thriller starring Josh Hartnett and Jim Gaffigan which filmed in Thailand, Vancouver and Montreal.

Love & Oatmeal

Pitch Perfect star, Tony and Grammy award winner Ben Platt got his first leading role in this drama.  He was joined by Gone Girl star Lola Kirke and Vancouver’s Debs Howard.


Monkey Beach

Based on the 2000 novel of the same name by BC writer Eden Robinson, Monkey Beach is a Native supernatural mystery. It stars Adam Beach, Grace Dove, Nathaniel Arcand, Miika Bryce Whiskeyjack and newcomer Ta’Kaiya Blaney. It’s set in the Pacific Northwest and filmed in Vancouver and Kitamaat this fall.


Needle in a Timestack 

Starring Leslie Odom Jr, Freida Pinto, Cynthia Erivo and Orlando Bloom.

Pitch Perfect star Anna Kendrick plays Santa’s daughter, Nicole Claus, in the Disney movie Noelle. The Christmas movie is slated for release on November 8, 2019. It shot in Vancouver and Whistler and also stars Bill Hader, Shirley MacLaine and Billy Eichner.


Red Snow

This Indigenous Canadian drama adventure filmed in town for a couple weeks in May. It also filmed in the North West Territories.

Sonic The Hedgehog

The live-action & CGI movie stars James Marsden, Jim Carrey, Tika Sumpter, Neal McDonough and Ben Schwartz as the voice of the beloved Sonic character. It’s set to release on November 8, 2019.



21-year-old Australian actress and 13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford plays the female lead in Spontaneous, a sci-fi fantasy film based on the young adult novel of the same name by Aaron Starmer.


The Art of Racing in the Rain

The film adaptation of Seattle author Garth Stein’s novel The Art of Racing in the Rain stars Milo Ventimiglia, Amanda Seyfried, Gary Cole, Kathy Bates and Kevin Costner as the voice of Enzo the dog.

The Perfection

Starring Allison Williams from Girls and Get Out as well as Logan Browning from Dear White People


The Predator

Additional photography and reshoots this year pushed the release date to September. Local star Jacob Tremblay took his co-star Olivia Munn boating on the Fraser River.




Wings Over Everest

This Chinese action-thriller stars Chinese, Japanese, British and Canadian actors. It filmed in Beijing, the Himalayas and British Columbia.
