Burnaby RCMP are trying to identify a group of thieves that have been stealing mail from residents in condos and apartments.

RCMP say, in some cases, more than 100 mail boxes have been cleared out in a matter of minutes.

Burnaby RCMP are now warning residents to pick up their mail on a regular basis. They suspect these thieves are using people’s personal information to commit identity theft and fraud.

“People don’t realize that criminals are using all kinds of information contained within stolen mail to commit further crimes,” said Cpl. Daniela Panesar.

The suspects are allegedly getting access to the building in the middle of the night and have released a surveillance video:

The Burnaby RCMP’s Prolific Offender Suppression Team (POST) has taken over this investigation and are estimating up to five suspects have been involved in the thefts over the last few weeks. However, they are not sure if these suspects are working together.

“We want people to know that just because your credit card wasn’t stolen doesn’t mean that criminals won’t use the information on a utility bill to gather further information about you to commit further crimes, such as fraud,” said Panesar.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999.
