You can ask any Canucks fan today, and they will tell you that the Vancouver Canucks let one hell of a goalie leave town in Cory Schneider.
Well that same goalie was back in town Sunday night, and helped his New Jersey Devils to a 3-2 road victory.
Schneider brushed aside the significance of winning in Vancouver a couple of times. It was more important to finish a quick road trip on a positive note.
“It still feels like a second home,” said Schneider, who lost in his first two return trips. “It feels very natural to be back here, but at the same time it also feels good to win here and to beat them.”
After seeing a scoreless first period, the Devils opened up the scoring at the 1:05 mark of the second period, when Mike Cammalleri was all alone atop the crease when Kyle Palmieri knocked to him from the side of the net. Cammalleri waited patiently for Markstrom to kick his leg up, anticipating a high shot, so he could slide it in along the ice.
The Devils didn’t sit on their 1 goal lead, and in the third Andy Greene scored his second goal of the year on the power play which came at 1:31 of third period.
Henrik Sedin ended Schneider’s shutout bid with a shorthanded goal 7:21 into the third period after the Devils goalie misplayed the puck to Daniel Sedin in front of the net.
However, the Devils restored the 2 goal lead shortly after when Adam Henrique covered up for Schneider’s miscue and beat Jacob Markstrom for his ninth goal of the season at the 9:25 mark of the third.
The Canucks were able to add one more very late goal coming with one second left in regulation when Radim Vrbata got his fourth of the year, but nonetheless the Canucks fell 3-2.
Jacob Markstrom made 19 saves for the Canucks (8-8-6), who ended a four-game losing streak against Chicago the night before but have only one win in their past six games (1-4-1).
Up Next: The Canucks get two days offs before heading to Minnesota for a match up with the Wild.
