Canada has issued a number of travel advisories for some popular vacation destinations. If you’ve got travel plans this fall, it might be good to check if your location is under a warning.
While travel advisories won’t outright bar you from travelling to another country, it is recommended that you follow the advice given by Canada’s Travel Advice and Advisories website page.
CANADA TRAVEL ADVISORIES
Travel advisories are split into four different categories. At the bottom, you have “take normal security precautions.” Things begin to heighten as you go up, leading to exercising a high degree of caution, avoiding non-essential travel, and then avoiding all travel.
Travellers are always recommended to practice standard caution while in a different country. Although, some destinations are experiencing a number of issues that can make travelling more difficult or dangerous.
DESTINATIONS UNDER A TRAVEL ADVISORY
- Italy: Exercise a high degree of caution
- Petty crime– such as pickpocketing and bag snatching– occurs frequently throughout Italy. Incidents of sexual assaults have also happened against foreign women, as well as spiked food and drinks that can put you at risk of assault and robbery. Terrorism is also a rising threat in Europe with attacks that have been carried out in several European cities.
- France: Exercise a high degree of caution
- An elevated threat of terrorism has caused France to experience a number of deaths and injuries. Opportunistic and premeditated attacks have occurred over the past several years, with further attacks likely.
- Spain: Exercise a high degree of caution
- Petty crime is an ongoing issue in Spain with many reports of pickpocketing and bag snatching. This is especially prevalent in bigger cities like Madrid and Barcelona. Thieves are also known to provoke road-related incidents that may lure motorists to help them, resulting in a theft. Europe has also experienced multiple terrorist attacks in several cities.
- Sweden: Exercise a high degree of caution
- Violent crime has been known to happen in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö, particularly through gang and organized-crime related activity. The Government of Sweden also maintains a public alert system on terrorism, and has placed its current threat level at 3, “elevated threat”, on a 5-step scale.
- Netherlands: Exercise a high degree of caution
- A number of terrorist attacks have been carried out in several European cities, and so attacks in the Netherlands cannot be ruled out as a possibility. Further attacks throughout Europe are likely, including highly populated areas like airports, transportation hubs, and tourist attractions.
