If you were planning on travelling across the Pattullo bridge this May long weekend, you’ll need to add a detour to your trip. Due to ongoing construction to its replacement, the bridge will be completely closed to all vehicle traffic until the long weekend is over.

A NEW BRIDGE

Since 2021, the Pattullo bridge’s replacement has been under construction. It’s slated to complete in 2025, but that doesn’t mean the work is over just yet. Currently, construction is underway for a new fourlane, tollfree bridge that is meant to improve everyone’s travel from New Westminster to Surrey, and vice-versa.

Named the Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project, this long weekend’s closures are to assure the safe installment of drainage, as well as completing foundation work for the approaches in New Westminster and Surrey.

Thus, the bridge will be completely closed to all vehicle traffic in both directions. Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to cross, though.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The closures will begin Friday, May 16 at 9pm, and the reopening will be on Tuesday, May 20 at 5am. Additionally, those in the area should expect noise while construction proceeds.

For alternative routes, drivers are being instructed to use either the Port Mann or Alex Fraser bridges. If you’re using transit, the N19 night bus is also being rerouted over the Alex Fraser and Queensborough bridges. This is happening between New Westminster and Scott Road stations.

There will be plenty of signage near the Pattullo bridge to indicate changes in traffic. There will also be traffic control personnel on-site. Drivers should plan for up to an additional 30 minutes of travel time.
