If you were affected by a Yahoo! data breach, then you should have received some extra cash in your pocket this month.

YAHOO! LAWSUIT

A class-action lawsuit against Yahoo! Inc. and Yahoo Canada Co. has resulted in the Ontario Supreme Court approving a settlement of $20 million for those affected by multiple data breaches. The settlement was approved back in 2024, but the payments are just starting to come out now.

Allegedly, the company “experienced multiple data breaches between 2013 and 2016… because it had inadequate data security measures in place to protect account holders’ personal information. Yahoo! released three breach notices from 2016 to 2017, constituting the “Notice Dates.”

Yahoo! denies that they have “violated any laws and deny that they have engaged in any wrongdoing.” Fortunately for those that had their data exposed, the claims period has now begun for Canadians that are eligible to receive a portion of the $20 million share.

CLAIMS PERIOD

There are two different types of claims that people could have submitted for: Category A or Category B. Category A was for people who had expenses within four months of getting any of the breach notices. Meanwhile, Category B was for claims that resulted in “wasted time and inconvenience”, going up to five hours for each data breach.

The payout is a maximum of $375 per affected consumer. The only issue is that the Claim Form window has been closed since December 27, 2024. If you didn’t make a claim by that date, then you are unfortunately out of luck to receive a portion of the settlement.

If you did make a claim, then you should have received an e-transfer on August 26.
