Packing For a Day at the PNE with Kids
From rides and games to food stands and live shows, a day at the PNE is packed with activity—and plenty of “just one more ride” requests. You don’t need to plan for everything, but bringing a few key essentials will keep your kids comfortable, happy, and ready for a full day at the fair.
Here’s a practical guide on what to pack for kids at the PNE Fair to keep your visit smooth, safe, and stress-free.
Choose Your Bag Wisely
Before you start packing, it’s important to know the PNE‘s bag policy. All bags must be 8.5 x 11 inches or smaller, so don’t bring your big backpack or oversized tote.
You’re best off with a belt bag, fanny pack, or clear plastic bag. You can carry them around all day, and they can speed up entry when you arrive.
Strollers are Allowed
If you’re going with a little one (under 5), strollers might be a good idea, as they offer a place for kids to get some shade, sit down to rest, and even take a nap.
Strollers are allowed at the PNE and Playland if they are smaller than 36 × 52 inches. However, storage space is limited at some attractions and indoor venues. So if it gets too full, you may have to pass on some events.
A limited number of strollers are also available to rent at Guest Services on a first-come, first-served basis. Stroller rentals cost $10 per day (tax included), with a $100 refundable deposit and a signed rental agreement required.
Note that wagons, skateboards, and large wheeled bags are not permitted.
Bring A Reusable Water Bottle
Bringing your own water bottle to the PNE is one of the easiest ways to save money.
Water refill stations and fountains are available throughout the grounds. You’ll be glad you don’t have to buy bottled water every time someone gets thirsty in the summer sun.
Trust us — kids somehow become twice as thirsty when rides are involved.
Pack For Vancouver’s Unpredictable Weather
To start off with, be sure to pack sunscreen, and wear a hat/sun glasses. Even on cloudy days, UV exposure can add up.
However, even a sunny afternoon can quickly turn into a cool evening. Although the forecast may look perfect, it’s worth packing a lightweight sweater or jacket for each child.
Pack a compact umbrella that is 12 inches or shorter if rain is a possibility. Hopefully you won’t need it, but Vancouver weather has surprised all of us before.
Bring Your Own Food
This is something a lot of families aren’t aware of. Outside food is permitted at the PNE, which means you’re welcome to bring food and snacks for your family.
There are a few restrictions to keep in mind:
- Coolers are not permitted
- BBQs are prohibited
- Gum and candy are not allowed
Instead, think simple and portable. Granola bars, fruit pouches, crackers, sandwiches, and cut fruit are all great options for keeping hungry kids happy between meals. Keeping snacks on hand while you wait for rides can also prevent mid-afternoon hunger meltdowns.
Pack A Few First Aid Essentials
Getting our steps in is part of the fun at the fair. Packing a few small essentials can make a big difference:
- Blister relief strips
- Hand sanitizer
- Wet wipes
- Bandages
- Ice pack or (Freeze a water bottle)
- plastic bag for storing wet clothes, leftovers, or purchases
If you need medical help at the PNE or Playland, tell a staff member or security officer right away. Guest experience booths can also call for medical assistance. First Aid stations are located at the Pacific Coliseum and near Playland Gate 11, and roaming medical teams are also on site and available to help.
It may also be a good idea to bring a change of clothes and extra socks if your kids plan on riding the Cedar Rapids Log Flume.
Nobody enjoys spending the rest of the day in soggy clothes.
What to Do If You’re Separated
Not a packing item, but it is good to have some protocols in place before you go on what to do if you get seperated from your little ones.
Tips for a safe visit:
- Before entering, you can stop by PNE Guest Services to pick up a Child Find sticker and add your contact information to place on your child.
- It’s a also good idea to take a picture of your child, showing what he is wearing.
- If your child is older, choose a family meeting spot as soon as you arrive, and communicate to them what to do if they cannot find you.
What parents should do if they can’t find their child:
- Tell a staff member, ride operator, or security guard right away.
- Give a clear description (name, age, clothing, and last known location).
- Go to the PNE Parents Room, where lost children are usually taken.
- If they’re not found after some time, call 9-1-1 or PNE security at 604-253-2311.
Ready For A Day Of Summer Fun at the PNE This Summer?
If your kids are already asking when they can go back before you’ve even left the fairgrounds, it might be worth looking into a Playland season pass. For families planning multiple visits during the summer, it can quickly pay for itself.
While the PNE Fair doesn’t officially kick off until August 22 to September 7, 2026, you don’t have to wait until the end of summer for the fun to begin. Playland is currently open on weekends, with weekdays opening in July. Just remember that it’s closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
