Vancouver Whitecaps Blast Past LA Galaxy In 4-2 Win

The Vancouver Whitecaps (1-2-1) used a second half surge to blast past the visiting LA Galaxy (1-3-0) by a score of 4-2 on Saturday to get a needed victory.

In front of a crowd of 25,083 at BC Place, Fredy Montero, Matías Laba, and Cristian Techera led the Whitecaps in a second half push that saw them pull away in the end.

Fredy Montero had a goal and an assist in a span of less than a minute in the second half.

Coming out aggressively, the Whitecaps had plenty of early chances and were rewarded with the game’s first goal.

Missing an earlier attempt, Cristian Techera was able to beat Galaxy goalkeeper Clement Diop in the 19th minute, set up by a diagonal pass from Sheanon Williams.

Four minutes later, Vancouver almost doubled the lead courtesy of Alphonso Davies, getting behind the defence. Jelle Van Damme was able to make a sliding play to knock the ball away eliminating the scoring chance.

Moments later, Romain Alessandrini tied the game up for Los Angeles off of the right side.

The shot hit the near post, and with a sprawled Ousted on the turf the ball bounced in off his head.

The Galaxy doubled up the score 30 minutes later. Jack McBean brought the ball before sending the ball to Emmanuel Boateng on the left side. Boateng then fed Alessandrini at the top of the box with a well-timed pass to make it 2-1.

In need of a win badly, the Whitecaps came out gunning in the second half.

Entering the match as a halftime substitute, Montero scored his first MLS goal for the ‘Caps in the 66th minute. Techera got another shot on Diop, and Montero was all over the rebound to tie it up at 2-2.

A minute later, Vancouver would wrestle the lead back with Montero threatening again. He found Laba at the top of the box, where the Argentinian midfielder blasted a rocket for the 3-2 lead.

To finish it off, the Whitecaps got the insurance goal in the 87th minute. Diop made the save on Montero’s shot, but Laba flew in to head in the ‘Caps fourth goal of the match.

With the first win of the young season, the Whitecaps now shift their focus to the CONCACAF Champions League. They host Tigres UANL at BC Place on Wednesday, April 5, 2017.
