Surrey designer Alex S. Yu‘s toilet paper dress was one of 16 designs walking down the runway at a Toronto fashion show.
Following the “Legends of Fashion” show September 25, Yu is seeking votes to help him win the Vote Couture for the Cure contest.
“Excited to announce that I am one of the 16 designers chose to participate in the Cashmere Collection,” Yu said on Instagram.
The event is an annual charity where company Cashmere Bathroom Tissue invites designers to showcase outfits made from toilet paper.
They then ask the public to vote on their favourite design. For each vote, the company Cashmere donates a dollar to breast cancer research.
After getting accepted into the show, Yu got to work on his idea. He created a dress inspired by Belgium designer Martin Margiela.
“The dress is very experimental and avante garde,” said Yu to Surrey-Now Leader. “I would describe it more as a showcase art piece, with lots of little details, paint and glitter, and stitches.”
The project took about two weeks to make, resulting in a toilet paper dress of multiple textures and shapes.
While Yu is based in Surrey, the designer graduated from London College of Fashion and launched his first line in 2015.
Voting period ends by November.
