Richmond Is Hosting A Slugfest On June 7

Things are going to get sluggy in Richmond this weekend as the Richmond Nature Parks hosts Slugfest, a free family event in appreciation of slimy, yet fascinating creatures.

The event will take place on Sunday, June 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. and host competitions for the heaviest, smallest and slimiest mollusk along with Cecil, the giant slug, judging this year’s Most Beautiful Slug contest. The event will conclude with the Great Richmond Slug Race, which always attracts a hysterical crowd cheering on their favourite slimy specimen through the finish line.

The day’s event also includes a passport for children to collect stamps for every slime-based activity completed, crafts, a scavenger hunt, a photo opportunity with Cecil, carnival games, trivia for adults, and viewing of comics and poetry in the Galerie de Gastropod.

While this event is all about fun, it’s also a time to recognize the importance these creatures play in the natural environment converting nature’s waste including dead plants and animals into nutrients that help plants grow. As prey, they are tender, tasty morsels for a variety of creatures such as geese, skunks, turtles and salamanders.

If you are bringing a slug from home to compete or show off, remember to be sure to ensure its comfort during transportation. Keep it in a cool moist enclosure such as a jar with air holes, moist paper towel and greenery.

Slugfest is suitable for all ages. Admission is by donation; proceeds support educational programs at the Nature Park. Parking is
