Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum wants the city to build an “international recognized sanctioned stadium” at Bear Creek Park and he’s determined to make it happen.
Wanting to promote sports tourism in Surrey, McCallum says this new stadium will have people coming in from all over the world to compete.

A New Stadium
“We want to promote tourism in Surrey. That helps all our small businesses – motels, restaurants, shopping and so forth,” said McCallum.
Wanting to break ground on the new facility as quickly as possible, McCallum stated this project “is in the budget.”
He also mentioned the city will be applying for funding for the new stadium as well.
“We feel it’s a very important project that we need to start on very quickly”.
Instead of building a new track all together, this project is set to replace the existing track at the park.
The project is estimated to take about two years to complete.
“We met with a lot of sports facilities, it’s not just track and field, it’ll have some type of football or soccer field probably in the middle of it. We can do other sports that are there as far as the stadium,” he adds.
According to reports, McCallum originally stated the stadium could possibly hold 12,000 people, however, according to a spokesperson in the Mayor’s Office, it will probably be about 2,200, instead.
Nonetheless, the idea of a new sports stadium at Bear Creek is being positively welcomed by many sports groups in the community.
