Upon the agreed memorandum to toll the Pattullo Bridge replacement, there’s been a lot of mixed feelings, and for the most part people aren’t happy. A big part of the public’s disappointment stems from the fact that the proposed Massey Tunnel replacement bridge will also be tolled, ultimately leaving Alex Fraser as the only non-tolled bridge to cross the Fraser River.
Delta’s Mayor Lois Jackson is among many who shared their concern, and also offered a simple yet effective suggestion of tolling all bridges the same low price, as opposed to different bridges having different and high prices.
While Transportation Minister Todd Stone has noted the tolling policy needs a review, he indirectly admitted it’s not exactly on the top of his agenda given the bridges won’t be open for another 4-7 years.
Christy Clark however has decided to act, and has assigned two ministers to review metro Vancouver’s tolling policy.
“We are looking at all of the issues that we need to face in the region. When the Massey project moves ahead and depending on what the funding arrangements are if it becomes a tolled facility, which it is looking like it will be, and we are looking at the Pattullo bridge, which the mayors have indicated they want as a tolled facility.”
Given the timeline for both bridge replacements is not in the near future, it’s fair to expect the ministers won’t have their review complete anytime soon.
In the meantime, Translink is reviewing regional impacts in the scenario that the Alex Fraser becomes the only free bridge. The outcome will likely affect other infrastructure and future plans for the transit provider.
