As a student, it’s extremely difficult to keep up with all your classes, perhaps maintain a part time job, all while struggling to leave some time for a social life. The entire college process of lectures followed by tedious exams and lack of sleep can be exhausting for us students!
For the reasons listed above, many students have turned to what’s being called “campus crack” which is formally known as Adderall – a medication normally given to those who are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder.
Adderall is said to help students sleep less by giving them a jolt of energy and concentration. A December study has found that 11% of Canadian Post-Secondary students have used some sort of prescription drug as an academic boost.
Some students however are against the use of ADD drugs to those who aren’t really diagnosed with the condition, they find that it gives the other students who don’t take any prescription drugs an unfair advantage, because perhaps they will be able to grasp a concept better than the average students thanks to the drug’s ability to give an energy boost. Similar to those who take steroids to do better during a race.
Undercover cameras in the UBC library have found that it doesn’t take long for students to find someone selling the drugs, and even more conveniently students may go to their student health centre and get a prescription themselves by filling out a self-assessment about their work habits.
Taking prescription drugs not meant for you can have its risks and complications, but at the same time from a student perspective their mindset is coming from an academic viewpoint, they take these drugs in order to push to their highest abilities!
Thoughts?.
