Heading out to see the Honda Celebration of Light has been a long-running tradition of Metro Vancouverites. Ever since its inception in 1990– originally called the “Symphony of Fire”– crowds upon crowds of people have enjoyed the spectacular firework displays.

Although the celebration is recognized as the “longest running off-shore fireworks festival in the world”, 2025 may be the last year it is ever celebrated as its funding is cut and support dwindles.

RISING COSTS

It’s no surprise that the price of living has soared in the past years– but these costs are hitting event organizers, as well. With diminishing government support, too, the future of the Celebration of Light is in jeopardy.

In both public and private sectors, funding has taken a hit. 2023 saw the provincial and federal government granting the event $700,000 altogether. 2026 will see provincial support fall to merely $100,000 as federal funding dries up completely.

Corporate sponsors have also been backing out of the event as the uncertainty of Metro Vancouver’s costs continue to rise.

THE FUTURE OF THE CELEBRATION OF LIGHT

In a 2024 news release, the Government of Canada said that, “The [Honda Celebration of Light] is one of the city’s anchor summer events, drawing over one million visitors to English Bay each year. It brings local residents and tourists together, benefiting businesses and celebrating music, food and culture.”

As one of Vancouver’s largest festivals, the Celebration of Light annually brings floods of business to the Downtown Vancouver area, boosting sales in local tourism in spite of the world’s economic uncertainty.

The festival’s increasing loss in funding means further uncertainty for the event’s future. If no change comes to the Celebration of Light, then 2025 will mark its final year.
