Rare Footage Of Translucent ‘Cockatoo Squid’ Filmed On BC Coast

Researchers captured a rather unusual ocean creature on camera off the coast of BC this past week.

The footage of thee Cockatoo Squid was taken in the Juan de Fuca Canyon in the Salish Sea by the team on board the Exploration Vessel Naitilis.

 

Unique Features Of The Cockatoo Squid

Quite a sight to behold, Nautiluslive.org describes the anomalous sea inhabitant as, “Carrying tentacles above its head, the squid generally looks straight ahead, but can also direct its eyes laterally, giving its cockatoo-like appearance an extra googly-eyed flair.”

There are several marine creatures that are completely transparent, but this squid’s distinctive cockatoo-mane sets it apart from its peers.

The bird-like squid also has color-creating chromatophores; it uses these to turn its body from partially red to completely red.
