Fairies, elves, sprites and gnomes are said to be things of pure fantasy; however, this magical journey may have you believing in them a little bit more.

Salt Spring Island: the name alone conjures up visions of pristine, untouched wilderness. Off of the coast of British Columbia, this Gulf Island is one of the most beautiful and serene. Indeed, it is one of the best places in the province to truly “get away from it all.”

What’s more, this lovely gem on the island will have you feeling like you are in a mystical world. Although the natural beauty of the forest and the ocean will captivate you, the whimsical features on this quirky trail will leave you spellbound.

Along the course of the walk there are numerous, delightfully-tiny doors, constructed for the fairies, of course. The trail is located on Mount Erskine, and there are a few paths that lead to the enchanted walkway.

These doors are mainly crafted by a gentleman that lives on the island and takes immense pride in maintaining the tiny doors along this magical path.

The Big To Do List describes how the best way to take a short route is “heading out to Juniper Place off of Rainbow Rd and follow it along. Take a right at the fork, to the parking loop at the very end. There is a marked trailhead from here that can take you up to the top for a short rest while overlooking the ocean and the East Coast of Vancouver Island, and back down in about an hour (with small children walking themselves I would count on doubling this time). This trail is a much easier undertaking – especially in the heat of the summer!”

There are so many different places to check out in this beautiful place. Indeed, there is a farmer’s market that holds an abundant assortment of some of the best local, organic produce in the province. In addition, the small arts community on the island is regarded as one of the best scenes in the country.

There is also a multitude of wildlife, including deers, bears, birds, and more; the island is a perfect place to view them in their natural habitat.

For those looking to witness the alchemic glory of mother nature, check out Tofino on Vancouver Island for a beguiling spectacle of super-sized ocean waves. If you are looking for another magical adventure on a Gulf Island, check out these whimsical limestone caves on Gabriola Island.
