Davie Village in downtown Vancouver’s West End, also known as the heart of the city’s LGBTQ community, is about to receive a new pump of energy with a permanent floating sculpture over the intersection of Davie and Bute.
What was originally supposed to be a giant disco ball, will now be a space-age, massive metallic halo of light suspended over the rainbow crossings of the intersection to mark the “Heart” of Davie Village.
In addition to the halo, Davie Village may also receive a new patio style plaza on Bute Street, just south of Davie. The proposed plan suggests permanently closing off a one-block section of Bute off to traffic, for a pedestrian-friendly plaza with movable furniture for free arrangement of seating for informal use and plaza events.
The plaza will be named after the late Jim Deva, a popular Davie Street figure and long-time leader of Vancouver’s LGBTQ community.

The plaza will cost between $1 million – $2 million with hopes of becoming a casual gathering space for locals, pedestrians, and street performers.
Initial public surveys of the proposed plan indicate that over 70% of residents “like” the plan. If successful during its presentation to city council at the end of July, construction will likely begin this fall.
