Riding a BC Ferry isn’t exactly luxurious, but it is the closest experience some people have to a cruise ship.
To take their “cruise ship experience” to the next level, some drivers have decided to drink on board which has led to BC Ferries calling the police 15 times within June 2015 alone to deal with on-board drivers suspected to be under the influence.
Hoping to steer clear in July, BC Ferries has issued a public warning:
With summer holidays here, BC Ferries is reminding customers that the consumption of drugs and alcohol on its ships and at its terminals is prohibited. In June, there were 15 separate incidents where police were called out to a BC Ferries property because of a suspected impaired passenger.
“BC Ferries takes safety very seriously and that includes the sobriety of motorists on our property,” said Corrine Storey, BC Ferries’ Vice President of Customer Services. “We have a zero tolerance policy for passengers under the influence of drugs or alcohol and the unacceptable conduct that can be associated with impairment.”
BC Ferries reports individuals suspected of operating their vehicles while intoxicated to local police and works to help the authorities identify impaired drivers. BC Ferries encourages customers who witness the consumption of drugs or alcohol to report it to a BC Ferries employee to ensure the safety of our customers and employees.
