While car theft may be on the decline in Canada, that hasn’t stopped thieves from trying to make a getaway in your vehicle.
Wondering if your car is highly sought-after? A recent report has just revealed a list of the top stolen vehicles all across Canada, with certain qualities making specific cars far more enticing for would-be thieves.
Auto Theft In B.C.
Over the years, auto theft has declined on not only a national scale, but provincially, as well. Throughout Canada in 2024, there was a drop of 17% in motor vehicle theft. And in B.C., there has been a similar marked decrease.
Compared to 2019, 2024 saw 10,757 fewer thefts in the province. This comes after a steady period of around 7,000 theft-from-auto reports from 2021 to 2023, until 2024 came and officially had a further dip in numbers. This comes after the federal government’s action plan that was unveiled last year, which planned to work toward cracking down on auto theft.

Although, just because auto thefts are on the decline in Canada, that does not mean they aren’t still happening. In fact, the crime costs Canadians over $1 billion in insurance claims each year, according to Équité Association.
Top Most Stolen Cars Across Canada
Équité Association has listed the 10 most sought-after cars by thieves in Canada in 2024. Here’s the results:
- Toyota RAV4 — 2,080 thefts
- Dodge Ram 1500 Series — 2,018 thefts
- Honda CR-V — 1,911 thefts
- Ford F150 Series — 1,833 thefts

- Chevrolet/GMC Silverado/Sierra 1500 Series — 1,192 thefts
- Toyota Highlander — 1,141 thefts

- Lexus RX Series — 1,124 thefts
Équité Association notes that “newer SUV models, particularly those with vulnerabilities in their keyless entry systems, remain prime targets for sophisticated criminal networks.” The Toyota RAV4 was especially in high demand due to its “ease of servicing globally, and a high resale value.”
Auto theft clearly isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so the Vancouver Police Department has listed some ways to keep your car safe. This includes locking your vehicle and closing the windows, removing everything from sight and leaving nothing to steal within the vehicle, and parking in well-lit and well-travelled areas.
