Costco and Christmas go together like Santa and his elves.

The holidays are a special time for many, but with it usually comes all the prep work. That means taking a trip to everyone’s favourite bulk retailer to stock up on all the festive essentials. Only, this year is going to look different as some changes will be coming to Costco’s Christmas offerings.

CUTTING DOWN ON CHRISTMAS AT COSTCO

It’s no novel news to say that Canada is experiencing economic issues. In turn, that means consumers are having trouble with keeping up with life’s costs. From paying for gas, groceries, and other essentials, people are having to pinch pennies more and more often.

This has led to certain retailers cutting back on certain holiday offerings. Retailers like Costco are saying that they’re focusing on essentials more than festivities as customers are veering away from spending on them.

In spite of Costco’s latest quarter report noting an 8% increase in sales, as well as a 6% growth in membership compared to 2024, they still plan on pulling back on some Christmas items.

Things like Christmas trees and seasonal decorations are going to be skimmed, with the decision based on the necessities. This was revealed during a Costco earnings call to investors on September 25, 2025.

CONSUMER NEEDS

These changes come from retailers adapting to consumers’ needs. As the belt gets tighter for Canadians, reusing past holiday items becomes more financially convenient than purchasing new ones. If a family has a tree they use every year, then there’s no need to get another; and if they use the same lights as last year, then there’s no harm in using it again.

By focusing on the essentials, retailers are working alongside consumers as they steer away from what they may deem as unnecessary spending. As Canada’s economic uncertainty remains, sellers like Costco are required to react to the changing needs of their customers. That means changes for Costco’s Christmas offerings, and potentially other holiday events.
