THE GREAT CANADIAN TREASURE HUNT
The Great Canadian Treasure Hunt is exactly what it sounds like: a treasure hunt. This nationwide challenge is organized by The Northern Miner, a newspaper that reports on global mining news. They encourage bold adventurers to solve their riddle, uncover its meaning, and then journey out into Canada’s landscape to find the riches.
But there’s more. Even if you don’t end up finding the grand prize, there will be more prizes over the next 12 months. An additional 12 hunts will offer $25,000 prizes, so there’s still a chance for a dozen other folks to strike it big.

HOW THE GAME WORKS
If you like poetry, then you already have an advantage in The Great Canadian Treasure Hunt. The challenge hinges on a 52-line poem that hints to where the grand prize is held. “The hunt begins between the lines,” reads the website.
Additional clues are also dropped monthly on The Northern Miner and their socials. Once you think you’ve got an idea on where to go, all you need to do is follow the trail and strike gold.
Obviously, it’s not as easy as it sounds, but this treasure hunt is all about going on an adventure and having fun. But, winning $1 million is also pretty fun.
RULES
Like any treasure hunt, there are rules that all participants need to follow. The Northern Miner has all of them listed out on their website, but there are a few pertinent ones that everyone should know.
All the prizes will be located in accessible areas. That means you don’t need climbing gear, ropes, or ladders; and you definitely don’t need any off-roading vehicles or swimming equipment.
Also, don’t go searching on private property, in caves, mines, or tunnels, or underwater. The prize won’t be in or on man-made structures, or near where the dead are honoured like cemeteries, graves, or memorials. And obviously: don’t go hunting in industrial or hazardous waste areas.
Everywhere else is fair game. The prizes will always be publicly accessible and safe to reach on foot. Adventurers are asked to stay safe, respect the land and others, and play fair in the treasure hunt.
If you’re ready, get your thinking cap on and prepare to uncover the secret of The Great Canadian Treasure Hunt’s poem. All that’s on the line is $1 million.
